Cory is undertaking several projects to decarbonise its operations and to provide a benefit to the local community, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) and a local heat network. With these market-leading initiatives currently underway, this new position was created specifically to lead this area of the business and to help the business navigate the UK Emissions Trading Scheme, which will apply to the waste sector from 2028. Cory needed to recruit someone with a combination of expertise and comprehensive experience of working across a diverse range of carbon projects. The main challenge with this particular role was that it comprised both regulatory and commercial elements, in a market that usually sees an inclination towards one or the other.

We initially embarked on the search by conducting an in-depth assessment of all the relevant talent across the UK. To ensure the right cultural fit, we expanded our initial findings to canvass hundreds of candidates who not only matched the desired skill set but who also had the right soft skills needed for the position. This involved multiple conversations with candidates to explore their motivations, ambitions and management styles in detail so we could identify the best matches for the role, from which we drew up a longlist. This key role required someone who not only had strong senior project management skills but who also had extensive stakeholder management experience. Furthermore, the ideal candidate needed to be able to navigate both regulatory and commercial disciplines, which added an extra level of complexity.

With most candidates tending to lean towards either one discipline or the other in terms of specialism (or simply preference), the Buchanan team needed to take a deeper dive into each prospect’s core attributes, cross-matching these to the key pillars of the position. Undertaking this analysis helped to identify candidates who, while on paper were not obvious matches, in reality were a great fit for the role’s niche requirements.
Additionally, as a fast-growing business with a dynamic culture, Cory needed a candidate who would thrive working in an agile environment. Within two weeks, we mapped the legal landscape to ensure we had a clear picture of the talent pool and produced a longlist of candidates who matched Cory’s specific needs. Cory is undertaking several projects to decarbonise its operations and to provide a benefit to the local community, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) and a local heat network. With these market-leading initiatives currently underway, this new position was created specifically to lead this area of the business and to help the business navigate the UK Emissions Trading Scheme, which will apply to the waste sector from 2028. Cory needed to recruit someone with a combination of expertise and comprehensive experience of working across a diverse range of carbon projects. The main challenge with this particular role was that it comprised both regulatory and commercial elements, in a market that usually sees an inclination towards one or the other.
Our solution:
We initially embarked on the search by conducting an in-depth assessment of all the relevant talent across the UK. To ensure the right cultural fit, we expanded our initial findings to canvass hundreds of candidates who not only matched the desired skill set but who also had the right soft skills needed for the position. This involved multiple conversations with candidates to explore their motivations, ambitions and management styles in detail so we could identify the best matches for the role, from which we drew up a longlist. The Programme Director is an integral position at Cory, acting as a lynchpin between the major internal stakeholders. This key role required someone who not only had strong senior project management skills but who also had extensive stakeholder management experience. Furthermore, the ideal candidate needed to be able to navigate both regulatory and commercial disciplines, which added an extra level of complexity.
Our solution:
With most candidates tending to lean towards either one discipline or the other in terms of specialism (or simply preference), the Buchanan team needed to take a deeper dive into each prospect’s core attributes, cross-matching these to the key pillars of the position. Undertaking this analysis helped to identify candidates who, while on paper were not obvious matches, in reality were a great fit for the role’s niche requirements.
Additionally, as a fast-growing business with a dynamic culture, Cory needed a candidate who would thrive working in an agile environment. This meant we had to be more creative in our sourcing methods to ensure we found the right person. Our strategy included utilising specialist marketing and incorporating extra canvassing resources to not only ensure delivery but also maximise impact to find the best talent as quickly as possible.
