Today marks the end of Q3. For many BigLaw associates, that means quarter end closings, last minute client requests and long hours as they work towards their billable targets. If you are considering a move, it is easy to put it off until your workload eases or your bonus has been paid.
At Buchanan, we are already seeing firms interview associates with Q1 start dates in mind. That means you could explore opportunities now and plan a move after bonus season. Starting your search does not mean committing to leave before the end of the year.
If your bonus is the main reason you are waiting, my advice is to start the conversation. Be clear about your preferred timing from the outset. Some firms need an immediate hire, but others are planning for next year and may be able to accommodate a start date after your bonus payment.
Beginning now also gives you time to be selective. You can understand which firms are hiring in your practice area, meet the partners and assess the work and prospects for progression. You do not need to apply widely. A focused search can help you decide whether there is a role worth moving for.
Waiting until your bonus arrives means beginning that process alongside other associates who have made the same decision. Interviews, offers and conflicts clearance will still lie ahead. By starting in Q4, you could secure a Q1 move before the year-end search gathers pace.
You should check your firm’s bonus payment date and any conditions around eligibility and giving notice before agreeing when to leave. Those details should shape your departure date, but they need not delay your search.
If you already have a move in mind, Q4 is a good time to act on it. A conversation now could put you in a position to collect your bonus and start next year with your next role agreed.
