Where Law Firms Are Hiring

By Ciro Di Stefano

Not long ago, the legal press was full of stories about firms opening offices in markets such as Miami, Austin, Nashville and Denver. Having a presence in the right city became a visible sign of ambition.

The conversations we’re having today with clients are less about opening new offices and more about building capability. Firms are looking at where work is growing, which sectors are generating the strongest pipeline and whether they have the lawyers to support that demand.

Miami illustrates the shift. A decade ago, opening an office there was enough to attract attention. Today, firms are hiring private equity, investment funds, tax and private wealth lawyers because those practices continue to generate work. The focus has moved from geography to expertise.

Texas reflects the same trend. Houston remains one of the country’s leading energy markets, while Dallas and Austin continue to attract technology companies, financial institutions and private capital. Recruitment is strongest where those sectors are expanding, with firms looking for lawyers who can step into established practices rather than simply increasing headcount.

Nashville has developed into a much deeper legal market, driven by healthcare, corporate investment and private equity. Denver and Salt Lake City continue to benefit from investment in technology, infrastructure and energy. They attract fewer headlines than New York or Miami, but firms continue to invest in specialist teams there.

Washington, DC remains a major litigation and regulatory centre, but demand has broadened. Firms continue to recruit across antitrust, investigations, trade, national security, data privacy and artificial intelligence as clients respond to an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

Recruitment reflects that confidence. Searches that were paused earlier in the year are returning, and more firms are hiring to support growth rather than simply replacing departures. Recruitment has always lagged the market. By the time firms begin adding headcount, client demand has often been building for months.

The lawyers attracting the greatest interest are those with specialist sector experience. Firms are recruiting carefully, but they are prepared to move quickly when the right candidate becomes available.

Office openings will always make headlines. Recruitment usually provides the clearer indication of where firms expect future growth to come from.
